I have been thinking a lot lately about personal touch. It is something that I have always excelled at in every aspect of my life but also something that is so easy to forget. I felt like I had started to drift a bit in that arena over the last few months. In reality it is amazing to me how much more important, in my mind at least, it is in the day of the twit and the status update. Recently I have had quite a few personal reminders that have really set me back into something I once was incredible at. I hope this blog simply serves as the same for you.
I was watching some pre-game show about Peyton Manning a while back. They had all kinds of different players talking about how much they admired the guy. It was amazing to me because in general there is a regular admiration for a good quarterback, but you could see how people really felt different about the guy. They talked about his upbringing and then they hit the key. You see Peyton is a letter writer. Please don’t be fooled he is not an emailer. He is an old-fashioned hand letter writer. Most, including myself, think this is about archaic form of an expression as the Pony Express is to delivery! However, look at all of the other great football quarterbacks to come through the game. They are admired but on a personal level I guarantee they are not respected anywhere near the level that Peyton is. Taking a half hour to write a note puts him in a different league. Not bad, eh?
My second lesson came from good old Face Book. I like to follow those that have achieved a success that I am after myself. It is interesting to see who does what and how they do it. Often times the best lessons are not being pushed at you but are indeed right in front of you without you even knowing it. I had friended (a word that the dictionary will accept soon) a certain industry monster (meant in a good way) who I had heard a lot about over the years in my studies. Anyhow I really enjoyed reading Mr. John Fogg’s stuff when the real lesson dawned on me as I was looking at some of his photo albums. I immediately went back to all of the notes posts that I saw on his wall and saw there was a pattern. It was something that I used to be amazing with but had fallen a bit off with as well. This guy had responded in some form to every single person who took the time to post about one of his pictures or notes. It might not have been happy dappy all of the time but it was a genuine answer. The care factor to take the time is one of the things that makes someone such as he genuinely liked and rightfully so followed. Amazingly enough this is not something that people do anymore which is why someone who does has such an amazing advantage these days regardless of intent. Another amazing lesson.
I could go on and on with stories but i think you get the point. The clincher today was when I was having lunch with two new pals who are quite successful in Real Estate, Thom and Ray. The same subject came up. We are all very active in the new world technologies but a care factor is something we all agreed cannot ever be looked past. It is something that if you take the extra time with you will be rewarded more than you will ever know. No matter who you are you will be better off if you show a little more personal touch.
Take the time. Add some personal touch. Show people you care and I guarantee it my friends your achievements will far outweigh those that choose not to believe in the human spirit.
