Doglish like many other things is a term that I have coined and made my own. You see I like to make up words and do consider myself a total goofball. I am ok with that but alas there is a method to the madness.
What the heck is Doglish?
Doglish is a language that I have watched my pal Tommy develop over time. He is not insane or really even weird for that matter just to let you know, but you would certainly think so if you saw him interact with dogs that he cares about. The first time I heard him say Azzida to my dog I thought he must have gone totally barking mad (hehee..get it). Over time I have watched and he has roughly 10 phrases that he uses that make no sense to a human, but I swear to it that the dogs know exactly what he is saying. You see he has gone to their level of comfort. I am not sure how but he has made it a point to take the time and somehow communicate in a different manner than any other human has with them and in reward they respond to him like nobody else. It is absolutely fascinating.
The lesson from this story is that our language and how we approach people or for that matter dogs can play a huge role in our success levels in business and life. Most would laugh at the above story but taking a little time for Tommy to make the dogs feel comfortable gets him an incredible response. Why can’t we do that with humans?
In business application how many times have you spoken with someone and were on totally different playing fields in terms of your knowledge of them and what they did? When they spoke of Investment Strategy or the current Real Estate trends were you dozing off waiting for your turn to speak? Most of the time we don’t think it is a big deal. We have our product or service and we pitch it. If they like it awesome. If not than that is there loss and they are just flat out stupid! But I digress my friend.
Why not learn a little bit about their language of thought? If you are talking to an Investor about your health and wellness product why don’t you talk about the product as an investment? You don’t have to learn the investors guide book but 20 minutes of prep will give you an overview of the world they live in. When you show this kind of care and talk in terms of familiarity you create a sense of comfort and just like the dogs you get a much better response when someone is comfortable around you. I promise you this is a truth.
You don’t have to learn everything about everyone but knowing a little bit about a lot will help you tons in the long run. Take a little bit of time and prepare and you will be paid back ten fold in the long run for your efforts.
